The 1st European Sambo Championship was held in the in 1972, Riga, Latvia. Representatives of 8 countries took part in the competition. The championship was open, so representatives of Asian countries: Iran, Mongolia and Japan were able to participate, as well as the teams of the USSR, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Spain and Great Britain. 10 sets of medals wereplayed out.
