Changes were made to the international rules of sambo

May 02 2022

On April 27, the members of the FIAS Executive Committee voted to make changes and additions to the International Sambo Rules. The list of innovations, as well as the dates when the decisions come into effect, are published on the official FIAS website.

Amendments to the International Sambo (Combat) Rules for all ages

1. To make an addition to Article 32. Warnings

To cancel the penalty (warning) for the intentional grappling:

— by the halves of the jacket,

— for the ends of the belt,

— the laces or boots of the sambo from the inside (because they are covered with the pads),

— for grasping the sleeve of the opponent’s jacket from the inside.

The decision is effective as of April 27, 2022.

2. Make an addition to Article 8: Participant’s uniform.

To introduce a new design of shorts (example — shorts for beach sambo) and to allow throws with grabbing the shorts.

The decision takes effect on January 1, 2024.

The main differences of the Combat Sambo rules (cadets, juniors) from the existing rules for adults

The Rules of combat sambo for adults and juniors are taken as the basis but with certain additions:

1. Protective equipment:

— Gloves with large volume and filling (6 ounces).

2. assessment of technical actions:

— A knockdown equates to a knockout — a clean win.

3. Prohibited technical actions:

— blows with the elbow;

— blows to the head;

— knees to the head;

— blows to the head with hands and feet in the supine position;

— hip lever and knot;

— calf muscle pinch through attacker’s shin;

— reverse shoulder knot with the leg.

4. Time of contraction: 4 min.

5. Strangling and painful holds:

Painful and strangling holds in the bout may be started only when the attacker is in the “lying” position, while the attacker may be in the “standing” position.

The application of choking and painful holds on the leg shall be stopped as soon as the attacker moves to the “Standing” position.

The application of a painful hold on the arm must be stopped as soon as both athletes are in the standing position (complete separation of the opponent from the mat).
