The International Association of the public union the “European Sambo Federation” was established in 1991 and officially registered in 2005. The European sambo federation (ESF) is a member of International Sambo Federation (FIAS).

The EFS unites 37 national sambo federations - Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Bulgaria, Great Britain, Great Britain, Hungary, Germany, Greece, Georgia, Israel, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Belarus, Republic of Moldova, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Ukraine, Finland, France, Croatia, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Belarus, Republic of Moldova, Montenegro, Russia, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, Spain, Switzerland, Ukraine. Candidates to join the EFS are the federations of Austria, Sweden and Norway. Today 20 national sambo federations are recognized by the National Olympic Committees.

The main goal of the European sambo federation is to develop and popularise sambo in Europe, to support national sambo federations and to promote sambo into the International Olympic movement. Annually the European sambo championship, the European sambo championship among youth and juniors, International tournaments are held in Europe. The European sambo championship among cadets is organised biennially.

The First Open European sambo championship was held in 1972 in Riga (Latvia) under the auspices of FIAS.

In 2004 the First European combat sambo championship was held in Siauliai (since 2007 it has been organised together with sports sambo).

Since 2005 the European sambo championship among adults and the European sambo championship among youth and juniors have been traditionally organised.

In 2007 sambo was presented at the First European Games in Ukraine.

In 2010 sambo was included in the SportAccord World Combat Games which were held in Beijing (China).

In 2012 the European sambo championship among cadets (15-16 years, boys and girls) was organised for the first time in Tallinn.

In 2013 sambo was included in the official program of the 27th Summer Universiade, the World Students Games in Kazan (Russia).

In 2014 sambo was included into the program of the European Games.The First European Games with sambo paticipation were held in Baku (Azerbaijan) on June 22, 2015.

Since 2015 the European cup has been included into the ESF sports calendar.

In 2016 under the auspiece of FISU the First World University Sambo Championship was staged in Nicosia (Cyprus). Also, the International Youth sambo festival for the prizes of " Collective Security Treaty Organization " was organised in the capital of Russia as well as the Annual International training camp for athletes in Kstovo (Russia).

Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Georgia, Italy, Moldova, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Spain, Montenegro and Serbia hosted many sambo championships during these years.

In 2016 during the congress of the ESF, which was held in Kazan, Dr. Sergey Eliseev was repeatedly elected as the President of the European sambo federation.

Sergey Eliseev is honored coach of Russia, honored worker of Physical culture of the Russian Federation, candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, professor, president of the All-Russian Sambo Federation.
