23 February 2016 there was a meeting between the European Sambo Federation President Sergey Eliseev with the President of the Latvian sambo club association Vsevolods Zelionijs in Moscow.
The main issue on the agenda was sambo development in Latvia. In recent years, sambo has been actively developed in Latvia and now attracts public attention. Sambo became popular among youths, that is why the competitions among cadets became crucial for the development of sport in Latvia.
It should be noted that Latvian sambo club association has repeatedly held competitions at the international level: World Sambo Championship among juniors, boys and girls (2011 and 2015); European Sambo Championship among cadets (2013).
During the meeting Vsevolods Zelionijs proposed an initiative to include two international tournaments in the calendar of the European Sambo Federation — “Daugavpils Sambo Open” in January and “Riga Cup” in October.
